Penrose Path
We kicked off this backyard build for a client who wanted to better connect a treehouse he built for his daughter. Located behind the house, the new trail creates a clean, functional link from the driveway and main home down to the treehouse, making the space much more accessible and usable.
Along the way, we cleared and installed a gravel fire pit area to create a gathering space that ties into the rest of the property. To connect the lower section of the treehouse back up to the main yard, we added a set of natural rock steps, thoughtfully placed to be both durable and in line with the surrounding terrain.
The path itself was built with sustainability in mind, using proper grading, reinforcement, and materials that improve drainage, durability, and long-term lifespan. Everything was designed to fit seamlessly into the landscape, blending function with a natural look that feels like it’s always been part of the property.
Week 1
Built a natural stone staircase from the base of the treehouse to the upper entrance using rock sourced directly from the property, carefully selecting and placing each piece to create a durable, natural-looking access point that fits seamlessly with the terrain
Bench cut the main walking path with a mini excavator to establish proper grade and flow, then compacted and lined it with weed barrier for longevity; extended drainage pipes underneath to maintain gutter flow and prevent water from eroding or washing out the new path over time
Reinforced the path with geogrid and landscape edging to lock everything in place, filled with gravel and compacted for a firm, stable surface, applied a gravel glue stabilizer for added durability, and re-naturalized the surrounding area to blend the finished path back into the landscape seamlessly
