Asheville Backyard Build

The primary goal of this project is to design and create a private, low-maintenance mountain-bike–specific trail that supports multiple uses, including morning workouts, guest riders, skills development, youth riding, and improved walking access to previously hard-to-reach areas of the property.

Week 1

  • Established the initial corridor to access remote areas of the property.

  • Cleared brush and vegetation throughout the corridor and surrounding areas.

  • Removed extensive storm damage left behind by Hurricane Helene, including significant chainsaw work throughout the property.

  • Prepared the property for future trail development and improved overall accessibility.

Week 2

  • Continued corridor clearing on the east side of the property

  • Began construction of the first singletrack section, establishing the trail shape and tread.

  • Continued cleanup efforts from Hurricane Helene, removing fallen trees and storm debris throughout the property.

  • Completed the first section of singletrack and gave it the finishing touches

  • The trail is fitting nicely into the landscape and giving a glimpse of the finished project.

Week 3

  • Continued building singletrack on the east side of the property.

  • Finished and naturalized completed sections as we progressed, helping the trail blend into the surrounding landscape.

  • Incorporated several standout features into the trail, including large rock formations and scenic viewpoints across the property.

  • Brought in a larger machine to begin work on the west side of the property and tackle heavier clearing tasks.

  • The west side contained numerous large trees, root balls, and storm debris, requiring significant cleanup before trail construction could begin.

Week 4

  • Wrapped up construction of the singletrack trail on the east side of the property. The finished trail creates a fun loop that can be ridden in either direction.

Completed all finish work on the trail, including cleanup and naturalization, leaving it ready to ride.

Continued cleanup efforts on the west side of the property, where significant storm damage remained from Hurricane Helene.

Removed a large number of downed trees and debris, allowing us to begin corridoring the next section of trail.

The west side trail is being designed with a different feel, featuring wider corridors, more flow, jumps, and additional trail features.

Week 5

  • Completed corridor clearing on the west side of the property, with the trail network now fully laid out and taking shape.

  • Added a jump line, flow line, and climb trail, creating a variety of riding experiences throughout the property.

  • Connected the new trails seamlessly with the existing trail system on the east side, allowing riders to move easily between all sections of the network.

  • Completed final trail work, including shaping, naturalizing, drainage improvements, and finishing touches throughout the project.

  • With construction complete, the property has been transformed into a cohesive trail system and is ready for riding.
